Decision fatigue is real

In this modern world more than any other time in history we are all faced with having to make countless decisions. Some are not so important, and some have consequences life-changingly so.

I’ve been weirdly obsessed with the decision-making process. More specifically making good ones. Well, that’s not true. I really care about not making bad decisions. I guess we all do. I have a whole “How to always make a good decision process”, that I break out when the big decisions loom.

There is a problem with that process it often takes a little time, so in those moments when I need to make a snap decision I have found a quick technique that I use. To make decisions on the move. That doesn’t have to be perfect and that I can stay happy with.

Here is the secret to quick decisions on the fly…

You make decisions that are “Directionally Correct”.

Let me explain how that works.

Firstly, you need clear goals or a vision that you have pre-loaded into your mind.

  • You know what you want. You know what success looks like for you. You know what destination you want to arrive at.

Secondly, these are low-consequence decisions.

  • If it goes wrong it is not the end of the world.

You know where you stand right this second

  • You need to be able to have a clear picture of your current situation. You are not deciding from ignorance.

Once you have those three things in place you ask the key question “Will deciding this thing move me “sort of” in the right direction that leads me towards my goals?

This is the “Directionally Correct” Question. It will allow you to make quick decisions on the spot that will feel write because they move you forward and hopefully in the right direction. There is a payoff for the directionally correct question… It moves you forward.

Loads of us get run over by “Paralysis Through Analysis” This gets you past that and moving in a jiffy.

So if you don’t need to make a life-changing decision but an everyday one this gets you moving in an instant rather than you standing around twiddling your thumbs umming and Ahing. The more you use this technique the more useful it becomes. Oh and the quicker you zig and zag in mostly the right direction to the outcome you are chasing after. Now go give it a go.
